How do you pick names for your characters?

A name should fit the character and I have two methods - one is to remember my school friend names and switch first and last names around and the second is to look in a telephone directory. You are right when it comes to looking at names that were popular when your character was born - that is so important and it refreshing to find someone who realises that. I went to school during the war years so most of my names stem from the 1940's as many of them are still popular today. Good luck with your writing.

For my recent story I have been looking up names as I think of them and seeing how popular they are now. If they aren't popular or common now I use them. My story is a medieval times type of story so I like their names to sound older.
