16 + 9 + 4 + 1 = 30

The basis must be a square otherwise the whole thing would fall down, not to mention the first wouldn't be supported properly based on the arrangement of the 3 visible ones.

You can only see 16 balls, but assuming a symmetrical, three-dimensional structure, there are 30 balls.

It appears to be a three sided pyramid. If so, there are 20 balls.

You can see 16 balls in the picture.

Counting the balls that should be present if this picture was a physical pyramid there would be 4^2 + 3^2 + 2^2 + 1 = 30.
