Advertisements. They will get paid a small amour of money every time you click on an advert. Companies will also pay to be sponsored links on google, you know the yellow highleted ones that show up at the top. On facebook companies like zynga, the makers of farmville, pay to host their games. It all adds up with the amount of traffic they get.

You know Facebook as a social networking site, and Google as a search engine that dabbles in other things. But you'd be wrong.

Both Facebook and Google and another few million websites are marketing engines, designed to get paid in exchange for getting your message in front of others. Do a google search, what do you see? You see a bunch of sponsored results, and then you get the real results indexed from across the web.

On Facebook, I'm sure you've seen those advertisements on the right hand side of the page, advertising everything from Facebook add-on services and applications to things people want to sell. These ads can cost as little or as much as you have to spend. The default charge... that is the amount that Facebook suggests that you spend per day when you set up your advertisement... is $50/day. You can change that to as little as $1/day. Then you can choose to pay for clicks or for impressions. Impressions are usually paid as so much $$ per 1000 displays of that advertisement. I ran an advertisement on Facebook a couple of weeks ago. I paid $0.31 per 1000 impressions with a $1/day budget. According to recent statistics, everyday, some 1 billion postings are done on Facebook. Every day, 300 million people (out of the 500 million subscribers) load one or more Facebook pages. Every page has 3 or 4 advertisements on it. Do the math. 1 billion x 300 million subscribers who load at least 1 page every day x $0.20 average price / 1000 impressions. How much $$$ is that per day?

A lot!!

Web companies like Facebook or Google get paid by people who want to put messages in front of the people using the website. And if the website is popular like Yahoo!Answers or Google or Facebook or MySpace or Wikipedia or CNN or DrudgeReport or whatever, then they stand to make tons of the green (USA) stuff.
