Am I being rude by asking my friend this question?
One of my friends from high school has been trying to get back in touch with me. Something about the situation I don't really trust. Maybe that's just me. We've been talking to each other on Facebook. Somehow we got on to the subject of cars. He told me that he has a restricted license. The license only allows him to go to and from work. I'm kind of curious into why he has a restricted license. So I played the stupid card. I asked him, "Oh, like a permit thing?" Is this a stupid idea or I just being nosey?

If you have a good relationship with your friend, why don't you ask him directly?

Sounds to me as though he might be trying to cultivate you so you can be his taxi driver for non restricted purposes. Somebody who's caught driving while impaired can wind up with a restricted license.
I don't think it's bad to be up front. I wouldn't see anything wrong with saying, " oh, what happened?" or something like that. If he finds it too intrusive, that's up to him to handle. |

Both, stupid and nosey. Let him be, if he wants you to know he'll tell you.

I don't find it to be rude or nosy. He brought up the subject, which (in my opinion) means that he doesn't have an issue discussing it. I think it was fine to ask him that.
