does pricing and the stock opening to the markets for the IPO happen on the same day? Concerning Facebook?

does pricing and the stock opening to the markets for the IPO happen on the same day? Concerning Facebook?
would it price say on the 17th and open on the 18th, or is it the same day? After hours?

It usually prices the night before opening for trading.

The stock market isn't a Walmart, no one is running around with a pricing gun, there is no pricing.

When you place an order to buy with a limit, they check the order book for the lowest ask and if it meets your limit or is better ( lower ) then that's the trade that you get. If the lowest ask doesn't meet your limit, your order becomes a bid on the order book.

When you place an order to sell with a limit, they check the order book for the highest bid and if it meets your limit or is better ( higher ) then that's the trade that you get otherwise your order becomes an ask on the order book.

There is no pricing, the price is determined by the orders being placed.

The only price that really matters is the one Facebook and its underwriters establish the day before trading begins. That price is what initial investors will pay for shares. The next day, it's all up to the markets. So it is expected to price on Thursday, the 17th, most likely after the markets have closed. See more in this C-Net press release:
