I'm selling a college book on craigs and got this email, not so sure about it.....


Hi,

Am glad it's available. I'm going out of the state to Madrid for a
family emergency but I will instruct my assistant to prepare and mail
your payment which I'm sure you will get in about 4/7 business days.
I'll add $30 extra for the delay. I'll pay by cashier check so send me
your info (i.e full name, mailing address and your phone number) so
payment can be mailed out immediately. I will also make arrangement
for pick-up which will be after you must have received and cashed the
payment.

CRAIGSLIST is for IN-PERSON transactions only. Always meet in a public place, like a coffee shop. Bring a friend if you want to be even more careful.

no. craiglist is full of those kinds of scams. My boss was almost victim at selling his plane. They sent him a fake check and signed it Judy Garland... Watch out. Try selling on half.com, more trustworthy source for selling books.

Scam. Don't even bother emailing back. I hate that shit! You can tell when it's a real person, they should have cash in hand ready to meet up.

These fake check scams have been around for years and years.
Surprised you didn't know about them.

You will wire money back. That will be the next email.
That check you get could clear at first, but bounce months later.
The pick up, is just a distraction.

It is a Scam.

It is just your typical fake check scam.

The check you receive will be for much more than you agree to. The scammer will blame his "assistant" (who really doesn't exist). He will tell you keep a some of the money. He will probably toss in an extra $100 for your trouble. He will then tell you to send the remainder back to him via Western Union. Then, a few weeks later, you are notified that the check was fake. You are now responsible for covering the fake check and you could even face criminal fraud charges yourself.

Expect a few of these responses when you sell on CL.

I'd be very cautious about this. Personally, it seems kind of phony to me.

A rule of thumb that has served me well for most of my life is this: if something about a business deal (or anything else, for that matter) seems suspicious to you, listen to it. I've found this to be true over and over again; when I go with a feeling that something isn't right, I've never regretted it--and have been very sorry when I didn't.
