How to prevent the text on a website from changing on different machines?
I am new to website building and I discovered that text on my website is distributed differently in different browsers and takes less space on the page in Opera for example than in Firefox. Then I went to the same page on a tablet and it displays the text in a completely different font altogether, (causing the end of the text to get cut off)! WHY!? That makes as much sense to me as a ghost airplane dancing in my living room wearing a tutu. Why would browsers/computers of OTHER people decide how MY website appears to them....uh...

How can I force the use of a particular font and formatting for all users so that they don't get problems with text getting cut off?

"How can I force the use of a particular font and formatting for all users"

That is you answer. You need to declare which font you want to use for the page and how it will be presented....

Typography is a subject to study on its own beyond web site design...

Be aware that the user can still use their own stylesheet which will override anything that you do and if you are messing with people's computers dictating what font they must use etc. you should give them plenty of options to change the font size, font colour and background colour etc. to meet their own requirements - old age/ poor eye sight etc.
