i want to start crochet i hear its pretty simple once you get the hang of it. i want to be able to make those little crochet toys, they are pretty cute. But i don't want to start a hobby that takes years to master. How long does it usually take? And is it easy to go from a beginner to be able to make toys? I am a working mother so I probably won't be able to dedicate a lot of time to learning, just here and there.

It definitely doesnt take time. You'll easily get the hang of it in a week. My teacher taught me and others during our SUPW (Socially Useful Productive Work) classes in in school. I remember making a mobile case and a table cloth when I was 14. Im 22 now and have unfortunately forgotten everything. But Id suggest you go to an expert and learn. Learning online wont be as effective.

And expert is someone who can make advanced patterns, with unusual stitches and difficult or no repeats. Very few people are advanced.

However most patterns are not advanced. Toy patterns are pretty easy, and it would take perhaps a few weeks of learning to get to that point. I'm self-taught, and if I can, you can.

If you want to learn, the best place to go online is The Crochet Crowd, hosted by Michael (Mikey) Sellick. He has a website (The Crochet Crowd), which offers 24 video lessons on the basics of crochet. He has dozens and dozens of YouTube videos, and a Facebook page with a very active community.

Basic crochet is easy , but making more than a blanket is as far as my talents go . However there are crochet circles in many towns where you can go and learn , get tips and have a good old natter with the girls . See if you can find one in your area . They are sometimes under "sewing or knitting circles " My friend goes to one in London which is how I know this .
