hi there, i make handcrafted items and sell them at local fetes and to friends etc .as quick as i can make them they are sold so i think they might be of interest to others.
ive been told about the website Etsy (http://www.Etsy.com) i know you can open a shop on there selling handcrafted items. has anyone here ever had any dealings with etsy and so can point out any pros and cons?

Hi Janet,

I've created an etsy shop before for one of my projects on the side. If you don't have the knowledge or time to create and manage a website. Etsy is definitely a good place to start your small shop.

How etsy works is that you set up a shop, put up a banner and list your items. When you are listing the items, you give it a name, set the price, write a description, how to pay, and the most important part, insert up to 13 keywords. The name and keywords are how people can find your item when they search on Etsy.

The PROS:
It is free to create, only have to pay 40 cents per listing and it last for 90 days (Don't remember the exact number of days) or whenever it is sold.

It is very simple to set up and they provide a lot of tools to help you.

Friendly community groups to help you

Integrated with Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.

Provide cheap paid search ad option for you to increase your reach. Paid search ads will help people notice your items.

Cons:

There are a lot of people selling on there. Other products may outshine yours and hard for people to find your items.

Although search ads are nice and helps increase reach but over time, the amount of money spent will add up. For my side project, I've used the search ad for a while and all I got are views.

There are a lot of "window" shoppers.

My own experience. Hope this helps.
