Sorry if localbusinessmerchant.com is actually your site, but it is currently at the nearly empty, useless stage, it's not organized as a "Local" directory, there should be a geographical selection at the top level, or automatic matching to the visitor's geographical location. Most categories are empty, Lawyers only lists about 36 offices in Illinois.
The promise of manually verified data is probably going to be an obstacle to it growing at any useful rate, where scraping data from existing directories is probably required to reach a minimal critical mass.

If you do have a business with a physical address, getting a Google places-map page and fully refining it would be much more important for getting local visitors.

Starting a business, as you know, is one of the hardest things to do. What people always do is focus on the business and neglect the advertising. The good thing is, you are ahead of the game considering you are focusing on the promotion of your business. The above post who stated Superpages.com is quite right. Superpages is a great source, I actually work for Superpages (Supermedia LLC). Based on the data I have, I know that there are three categories where most people look to make buying decisions:

1.Internet (SoLoMo, Social, Local and Mobile media)
2.Print Advertising (Yellowpages)
3.Direct Mail

These three categories will get you the most ROI (return on your investment). Depending on your specific business, Yellowpages could be the best, or the internet could be the best. In this day and age, there are many factors that go into driving results to a business, let alone a brand new business. Shoot me an email and we can schedule a time to talk about what you need to do. andrew.stoller@supermedia.com

Yahoo/Bing Local, Google Maps/Google Local/Google+ Local, Local Citation sites such as Yelp, Foursquare and so on. These are the sites you should be focusing on for a new business. If you need more citation sources for a keyword related to your site, use Whitespark.
