Is it justified to celebrate one's biological traits - for example International Women's Day?

Who really cares? I don't know anyone who actually celebrates national women's day. I have been out in public today and no one has come up to me and wished me a happy women's day. My partner hasn't said anything. I text my Sister this morning, she didn't wish me a happy women's day.

I don't understand it. It's not something you've done or made or earned.. you had no say in it whatsoever, it just happened to you.. why create an exclusive and exclusionary celebration of it, it's like celebrating seawater

We should all celebrate everything that we enjoy about our lives every day. If you wake up every morning feeling bad and blaming every one else for it then you are not living your life. I celebrate Mother's day with my Mother and Father's day with my Father. I also send my sister flowers on Valentines day to annoy her husband and think that my special women are just as important as my special men.

The day is celebrating the history of the conflict. We wouldn't celebrate it if the XY's hadn't treated the XX's badly in the past, just like all the race related days. The whole point is to acknowledge how far society has come together, in thanks of the women AND men who helped make out society more equal.

You've got it wrong. International Women's Day isn't about celebrating women just so women feel special for something they were born as. It's a day to remember all of the courageous women throughout history that have fought to get women equal rights, as well as to bring awareness to the oppression that many women still endure today. Also used to celebrate women's achievements and contributions that were so often swept under the rug or taken credit for by men.

Many groups of people that have had to fight for equality have days/celebrations for reasons similar to this: Black History Month for black people, Gay Pride for LGBT people, heck there's even an International Men's Day on November 19th like you said. I haven't seen anyone doing anything to celebrate International Women's Day though. No cards, no gift-giving, no parades or ceremonies, and I don't think anyone I have on facebook mentioned it either. Just a quiet day of remembrance and appreciation.
