A question about Twitter?

If I send a Direct Message and the other person did not reply will the message still show up for me, because when I sent this message and then went into my messages the message I sent was not their, do I need to wait for a reply for it to show up, or did it not send? This is the first message between us, their are no previous messages, if that helps.
