A wireless router need to be connected to a desktop for it to work since the desktop provide the router's settings and connection to the internet. So if your laptop had a wifi capability then it should be really simple since automatically the laptop should notify you to see if it detects any wireless networks then prompt to enter the WEP/WPA or else none.

In a domestic environment the only time you normally see stand-alone wireless routers is where an Internet connection is provided by a cable television provider. Where the Internet connection is provided using ADSL down a phone line you will often find a device that combines a modem and a router.
Older style connections use a cheap modem that often needs the support of a computer to work, but this support is often provided using a USB connection which is available both on desktop and notebook computers. I'm sitting here typing on a notebook. My connection to the Internet is across a wireless link to a wireless router than takes its connection from the Internet connection provided by my cable television provider. This would work as a standable set-up, although there are several other notebooks, a blu-ray player and a couple of headless servers also connected. |
