Why is political oratory dead?
Especially with regards to orators in the past, even as far as Rome and Greece, who could appeal to the masses and make eloquent speeches. These days this seems impossible. Most political speeches involve reading from a page, or stuttering in an effort to speak extemporaneously. They have no ability to emotionally move people with words.
I would say that the last great political orators were perhaps Ian Paisley and Martin Luther King, who incidentally delivered his most renowned speech after deviating from the written word and speaking off the cuff. The best political orator, that can be seen in video or sound recordings was probably Hitler. Napoleon and Lenin were reputed to be a great orators as well. Why can no one speak like that any more? With social media, no one has the patience to listen to anyone that long.

Typical Greek and Roman orations could last five hours. These days, we Tweet in 144 characters and our attention spans are on a par with chipmunks'.

I guess people have gotten smart enough to realize now that just because you speak amazingly and present something eloquently, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea or that you will be able to make it come true. Sincerity is more valued nowadays than eloquent lies.

You question says it all. They were great Orators but in the case of Ian Paisley and Hitler that is not really a good thing since they were able to convince people to commit violence.
