Google Chrome.. Ad problem?

I was wondering how/if I could turn off ads on Google Chrome. I love using Google Chrome.. Its fantastic! My only complaint is the ads. I don't know if it's because of the type of computer I use (Acer) or if its Google Chrome itself. All of my friends that use Google Chrome don't have an ad problem AT ALL, so I have no clue why there are ads in random and unnecessary places on every website I go to. If anyone could help me, please just tell me how to turn ads off or if there is something that is COMPLETELY free that I could download that doesn't slow down my computer. Thanks for your help (:.
