How can I force apartment management to fix leaking roof and ceiling?
NOTE: I DO NOT HAVE A LANDLORD. OUR COMMUNITY IS RUN BY EQUITY APARTMENTS MANAGEMENT GROUP SO I'M DEALING WITH A CORPORATION AND NOT A SINGLE LANDLORD. PLEASE GIVE ADVICE THAT APPLIES TO DEALING WITH A COMPANY AND NOT A PERSON WHO RENTS OUT THEIR HOME.

It's been 3 weeks since Isaac damaged the roof of our apartment building and put a hole in my bedroom ceiling. I was told 2 1/2 weeks ago that roofers were coming and to date no one has showed up. I then again 2 weeks ago when no one had showed up and was told they'll be here within a few days, again... nothing.

What legal avenue do I have? I'm in South Florida, its rainy season and the constant dripping of rain water through the ceiling into a bucket in my room is keeping me up at night and also you can see mold starting to appear where the ceiling is damaged.

I don't want to make a stink about this but I would like my roof fixed. What are your suggestions on how I should deal with this.

I've taken video, pictures and posted on my Facebook page comments about the leak to document it. I figured no one can argue about the time stamps on FB.

Mold is extremely dangerous in this kind of situation! Call your local department of Health & ask them to send an investigator out. Give the investigator digital copies of any photos you've taken.

Next, if others in your building or community deal with the same corporation, try and get them all together for a meeting. between all of you, maybe someone knows an attorney that deals with these types of problems & ask that they file a class action suit against the corp.

Back at the Health Dept angle...make sure the others you've banded with have been visited by this investigator. They (health dep) may feel it is necessary for each of you to move to another location, rather than stay in these homes. With assistance from the attorney, get an escrow account together for all of you. All rents go into this acct so that down the road you can never be accused of not paying. This is a perfectly legal avenue, to put rents aside, but not into the pockets of the corp.

They will get a class action letter from the atty stating the problem, stating all rents are in escrow, and the corp will receive absolutely NO monies until all problems are resolved and the fix has been approved by the health dept.

You will also be reimbursed for all expenses to live outside your homes. Whether it is at a hotel/motel, or staying with friends or relatives. They will be reimbursed some cash for you using their elec, water, bla bla bla.

This corp thinks because they are the "giant", that all you little people will cower. Get together. There is strength in numbers. Be the "David" to their "Goliath" and take them DOWN!!!!
