How to check if my laptop is working fine? It's i5, and I think it's still slow.?

I just want to know if there is anyway I can check my computer performance. I am not anywhere near a tech guy, so it would be awesome if you stay away from any technical terms.

Also, my internet connection keeps disconnecting every minute. I do not know if it is the problem of my dorm's router, or on my end; any ways to check that thing would be highly appreciated.
