I can't see how this is going to help her image. It's quite a silly thing to do really as a role model. Why would she do it? Attention seeking?

Because she can. If someone chooses a pop star as a role model, then they will end up a screw up anyway regardless of the pot smoking. What's wrong with weed anyway? It seems perfectly fine to show people drinking alcohol which kills 2.25 million people more than weed does per year worldwide.
