SEO stands for "Search engine optimization" ... ie SEARCH ENGINE - facebook has nothing to do with optimizing a site for a search engine. The links from facebook are nofollow so do not help at all.

HOWEVER, facebook is a great way to promote a site; reach out and interact with possible customers etc, so from that perspective, it is very important.

For your website's SEO? No, it's not. But Facebook is still very important for making your brand popular. Get a Facebook page, make people talk about it, write posts about your brand, share links of your page on other pages. This will help your potential customers find the brand name through SEs and Facebook itself.

Contrary to the previous answers, YES Facebook is extremely important-the Google Penguin algorithm update now means that "There's now more rank impact from link sharing with sites like Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn and Twitter". Google is obviously recognizing social media and its impact on search.

In the effort to provide the most relevant search results for those using a search engine to find what they are looking for, the search engines (ie: Google) are always updating how they determine which sites appear on the first page and in what order of relevance these sites should appear on the page.

Google in particular has said they are using 'social signals' from sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc to help determine which sites are the most relevant, popular, and have content being shared and commented on by others.

For this reason Facebook and other social media sites do have some impact on a websites SEO. Directly or indirectly, anything and everything about your brand and your website is important for your web presence. If having a Facebook Page is appropriate for your site, then give it serious consideration. Some social media sites are not well suited for all sites or brands. Do what is best for your site and your market.
