It's been going on since last weekend (so about March 1).
Russia invaded Ukraine in a surprise military attack without warning and took the important part of Ukraine (the 'Crimea') with heavily armed Russian troops in masks, hidden uniforms, and tanks, naval ships.
As a surprise they took it without fighting. Despite world outrage and protest, this past week they poured in 30,000 troops, planes, tanks, ships to keep Crimea and force it to be part of Russia.
The people....dying...you saw was from before that in the month of February. That month the Ukraine people rebelled and protested in 100,000's against their Russian appointed dictator 'Yanukovych'. They kicked him from office and on Feb.19/20 he committed the 'Maidan Square Massacre' where police and snipers fired on the crowds killing 80 civilians.
He's now a wanted international criminal and is now protected in Moscow by the Russians.
It's believed Russia plans to invade the rest of Ukraine soon, and it's Russia against the world.

The EU tried to enslave the Ukraine into the debt -based western system. The government turned to Russia for a better bail out deal. Putin obliged with a generous deal and cheap Russian gas.

The West then used proxies and agents provocateurs to oust the president.

In other words they carried out an illegal "regime change" in Kiev.

Russia reacted to protect its assets and citizens from the new regime.

They also have a right to military bases in the Crimea under a Treaty signed with the Ukraine. So Russia hasn't even invaded anywhere, despite what we are being told in the west.

The Western media and politicians are beating the war drum by accusing Putin of being a warmonger - what hypocrisy!

The West is the prime aggressor here in this.

Basically, the Russians invaded and overtook Crimea in Southeast Ukraine. Ukrainian army units can do nothing to prevent the capture of their military bases in Crimea. Crimea has asked to join Russia through Parliament vote. The UN is worked on a diplomatic solution, such as trade restrictions, which prove to be ineffective threats. Russia has yet to invade anything else in Ukraine. More recently, China somewhat voiced it's concerns on Russia's expansions.
