How does the privacy mode work on facebook?

I want to post something on my wall for only 1 person to see.I want to know when I turn the privacy off for new messages will that message stay private or become visible for everyone to see cause I don't want it to.

what you want to do is not possible - you are confused about how the privacy settings work

if you want only one person to see it, then just send them a message instead of posting it as a status
