like after a person's tweet it will have the number sign # and a word after it, what does that mean and why do they do it

it is like a tag. for example my tweet is: Happy Thanksgiving! #PEACE
like it goes along and it is also a way to get followers because if you click the tag then there are posts that have the tag (#walkingdead) in them...... |
