Why do people collect friends on facebook?
I'm always confused why people add anyone they've ever met, I'm forever getting friend invites from people I've met once and I find it really weird. Now I see some of my friends have 1,000+ facebook friends which is not a reflection on how many real friends they have, one friend has Sergio Aguero and Cesc Fabregas as friends (famous football players) I know for a fact he's never met them. Why do they do this?

They have nothing better to do than sit around on facebook all day, and think that there is some sort of "contest" to see who can have the most friends. They have no life basically. I never add anyone that I haven't met in person.

Why not, its fun to have other friends outside of yourown social circle. New people, new experiences. Of coarse they are not real friends, but its normal not weird. What's weird is being so guarded.

2 reasons...The majority of ppl who do this like to make themselves feel special by having all those friends. It's like a virtual popularity contest to them.
The second, less common reason, is that some people like to play application games on facebook that require neighbors to advance...so the more friends you have the more likely you will be to get others to play the game and become your neighbor so you can advance in the game. |

I can't understand your way of thinking.... I love reading the different status updates, and the more friends i have the more status updates there are... I'll comment on the ones that I can relate to etc, and get to know a few people (sort of)....
the thing is %70 of people are boring facebookians, so you need the numbers to get some entertainment. |

It's become a status thing. People think facebook is a virtual popularity contest, and in a way it is to those who value the internet more than the real world. But adding celebs and athletes is more of a way of showing your support of that person than claiming to be their friend.

It's a popularity contest on Myspace/Facebook. Some people live on those sights and need to get a life in the REAL world!
