Do people on facebook know if you have deleted them as family?

Ok so you know how on facebook you can add people as family like sister, father, cousin etc.? Well if I delete someone from that list will they know? Like will they get a notification or will it be public? I really don't want to hurt this persons feelings so would they know in any way besides looking in their family list and not seeing me there?
For those of you who have noticed someone did this to you or you've done this to someone?? What happened???

They'll know, it's a public notification. It's the main reason i dont talk to my brothers anymore

no they dont get a notification, but they would probably notice that your not on their family list
