How do i make a status function (much like facebook or twitter tweets) for my website?

I am trying to make a social website (it's only a little project for the summer) and i want users to write status or share what they are doing. I have searched everywhere but cant find anything to help me. Can anyone tell me how to do it or give a link which gives instructions.
Also, i would rather code it myself, not use something like htmlcommentbox
