Mothers, Fathers, Grandma, Grandpa, your next door neighbor, your boss, co-workers, your 13 year old cousin. Is there some sort of conspiracy going on here?

No it is a fad for now like MySpace and other things they come and go. Now many are complaining about the timeline so who knows how long fb will stick around in the popularity on the net.
