Why do people have so many friends on facebook?

Because people are lazy and don't want to try to have REAL friends so they have to have a bunch of fake ones.

Because they can. It depends on what you prefer. You have fewer friends because you can and you want to, just as they have many facebook friends because they can and they want to.

They want to be popular or are insecure about having few friends. Sometimes, people just add friends for games, so that's another reason.

Sometimes (often in school) it is a popularity contest other times (especially when you start changing schools/moving away/going to a bunch of different activities where you meet tons of people) it is a really easy way to stay in touch and keep up with others' lives/share your own. While you may have a close group of friends you chat with regularly, facebook allows you to cast a wide net and stay in touch by voluntarily posting things in a semi-public forum so that everyone can see what you are up to instead of you having to send an individual email to each person you want to know about something.
