What is the purpose of facebook, Twitter etc?

While I agree with you to a point, in regard to all the negative aspects; I think it's really about how you use these sites and what you want to get out of them..
Personally, I moved around a lot as a young person and finally utilized 'facebook' to locate & get back in touch with loads of people, from decades back; I'd never have had the chance to without.
I guess kids use it differently, but for adults it can be very positive.. truly social networking, plus I know people who use it for their business or even just to keep an eye on their teens

These moronic sites serve to give adults and teens the opportunity to act like brain-dead morons by posting pictures of themselves along with personal information ......... then "talking" to their allowed "friends" and "contacts" when they could simply e-mail them .... or pick up the phone !!

What`s next ?? Zuckerman selling out "Facebook Magic Decoder Rings" so you can encrypt your messages ????

Anyways Facebook apparently has only 5 more days of life left , according to Zuckerman !!
