I think you should give her a chance... but do take precautions. Never Ever let your daughter meet a male encounter claiming to be her age. She has to know that the world is a dangerous place to be in. The latest news story from CNN this morning reported that identity theft can happen when you give out your birthdate, city of birth, favorite hobbies and so on. If you choose to let her have a facebook, keep an eye on those interacting with her, these days you can never be too careful. Do not ever send money over the internet, even if it's a known aquaintance requesting it online. Chances are that facebook account is hacked and you're talking a complete stranger.

Yep, my 14 and 16 year old friends have one, and their 13 year old brother just got one. It's ok as long as yo are safe with it.

Facebook has very good privacy settings. I'd say let her open the account, but sit with her and go through the security settings with her and you guys can work out how to set the security levels for each feature (like photos, personal information, etc). Facebook is pretty safe, but as a parent you just need to be aware of her activities, that's all.

I think it would be fine for her to get a facebook. Make sure her profile is set to private. and i would suggest adding her as a friend on facebook, as that would make it easier for you to keep an eye on her.

My husband and I are in our mid 40's and we use it~
the key to internet safety is in just how much info is put down on the site.

I enjoy face book, as I am in touch w/ alot of my high school~ college~ and past coworkers from the last 15 yrs of working for an airline.

You would need to over see her initial set up and learning about the site~ I would also suggest you set up your own face book account also, that way the two of you can learn the different fun things by sending things back and forth to one another. If you are one of her friends you have access to her site as well. Its hard for me to explain. But defiantly you too have an account.

I would give her a chance~ I dont know how mature your daughter is at 13~ i was an only child and was extremal mature~ I will not even scare you with what I was doing at 13 (no not that!) ( but it was in the 70's too Smile

You can keep track of your daughters progress~ tell her you'll give her a trial...if it doesn't work...cancel it. I think with you having your own account too and your daughter having hers, you'll be fine, and i think you'll even have some fun with it.

Takes a bit of getting used to.

good luck.
