Rick Perry has a proven track record of giving his donors tax payer money.

This (to me at least) is the opposite of the "free market". It is literally the government interfering with the market place.

Yes, it is also a vote for Barack Obama, seeing as how Perry cannot beat Obama.

"Free market capitalism" as the true believer conservatives conceive of it is a political and economic myth. It doesn't exist in the form that its fans think it does. It can't. And if it did exist in that form, American society would be hurting even more than we're hurting today.

So Perry, if he has a brain in his head, probably is opposed to the purest form of "free market capitalism," because he realizes how impossible it is.

That may be why he favored a law forcing schoolgirls to get innoculated for the HPV virus, for example.

It's true that Rep. Michelle Bachmann and her followers are claiming -- maybe rightly -- that Perry's executive order on HPV was "crony capitalism," a legislative favor for some of his aides who had financial ties to Merck, the maker of the vaccine.

Michelle Bachmann is fanatically biased and not very smart, I think, and many things she says make little sense. But I think she's right about Perry and "crony capitalism."

I mean - hasn't "crony capitalism" been central to Texas politics since Lyndon Johnson's day, and before?

I think Perry is a shrewd, fairly self-centered politician who manipulates people with strong ideological beliefs, rather than always following them. He may be a great man -- he may be an idiot (my choice -- witness his remarks on Social Security!) -- but I don't think he's as much of a "true believer" as he pretends to be.

I hope not, anyway, given remarks he's made about radical Christians needing to follow the lessons of the Prophet Joel, chapter 2. If Perry isn't simply trying to manipulate the Radical Christian Right, and if he's really hoping for them to form "God's Army" and influence US politics, then may God help the rest of us. We'll need it.
