I have had a twitter for a while but i only used it to stay updated with my favorite tv shows, sports, news etc. I want get my friends to follow me but idk the natural system. Is it like when you follow them, they will follow you back? Or you have to request somehow? Do i just tell them? What is the natural way of gaining followers?

If you follow them it shows them who is following and they can choose to follow back or not. Some people will, some won't. I'm sure your friends will. Best way to get followers is search for people with similar interests or who follow people you like (celebs, pop stars, football players etc). Usually if you follow someone they follow back.
