What's the difference between a classical liberal and a modern liberal?
I'm a Democrat. But I was wondering which type of liberal I am. I believe in restricting economic freedom and keeping social justice and equality as a priority.

You would most probably be a modern liberal. Classical liberalism was conservativism. This was back in the day when the parties switched roles.

Modern liberals mostly ascribe to Keynesian economics, and a regulated free-market economy.
Classical liberals fall more in line with libertarians who want to eliminate government intervention in the free-market, however, this differs vastly from the neo-liberal policies as espoused by Republicans like Reagan and George W. Bush. They still used government influence on the economy with things like corporate subsidies, devaluing of the currency, etc. So classical liberals are supporters of a true free-market (not Republicans), and modern liberals believe in a more regulated one (often keeping in mind principles such as social justice and equality, which you brought up). |

Classical liberalism advocates for civil liberties with and emphasis on limited government and the Rule of law. It opposes government intervention or regulation in most cases and believes in the free market economy Classical Liberalism closely relates to modern conservationism. The Constitution is interpreted based on original intent
Modern liberals are closely related to 20th century progressives: Civil liberties with and emphasis on social justice, a mixed economy and more emphasis on a centralized government. Democrats Roosevelt with his New Deal and Johnson's Great Society are examples of Modern Liberalism. Theodore Roosevelt is an example of a Republican Progressive. The constitution is interpreted based on precedent and changing thought |
