It's advertising just like using tv, radio, newspapers, magazines, etc.

I applied for a job where they wanted to know all of my social media uses, including Yahoo!Answers. I refused to give them the information and dropped my application. I think that business is out of line checking out your personal Facebook page, etc. I am sure management get spied upon by business.

A lot of people use social media but then again, a lot of them don't. I personally don't so the fact that they are on Twitter or Facebook means nothing to me but its probably cheap advertising for them.

Businesses using social media have understood the importance of social media. While Facebook, Twitter have become a part of the daily schedule of a normal person, it is a very feasible idea to promote one's business on such websites. It helps them reach to a wide potential customer base.
