What does it mean when a player is optioned?
I'm a Giantd fan and Brandon Crawford just got optioned. I just don't know what "optioned" means. I don't see him in the dugout and people I'm following on twitter are saying bye bye crawford. Is he going back to the minors? Or to another team?

Players have a certain number of options that lets them be sent down to the minors. But MLB only allows a certain number of options. Once a player is out of options, and the team wants to send a player down, they "Designate him for assignment" which means he can choose to be sent down or released. I'm not sure how many options a player has, but yes, Crawford has been sent back to the minors
