Is AVG Free a good enough virus protection for everyday home use?
I am getting my parents a desktop Dell computer. (i switched to Mac a couple years ago). I have to set up the computer for them. Is AVG Free safe enough or should I buy Norton or something? They just use the computer for email, facebook, and ebay.

AVG free is more than enough. Norton and all those other virus protection software just hogs up memory and system resources and slows down your computer. I use AVG and I never have a problem with viruses or spyware.

AVG free probably doesn't have real time protection so I suggest using Microsoft Security Essentials. It is one of the best free security programs out right now. Since your parents won't be browsing insecure websites, MSE should be more than sufficient for their needs.

Microsoft Security Essentials will probably be a lot easier for them to use and give better protection than AVG http://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/mse.aspx

For me, Microsoft Security Essentials does the work. It's pretty good and minimalistic.
You're gonna need a genuine Windows though. |

Yes it is sufficient but add a secure browser like Firefox and a real time free anti-malware scanner like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.With the AVG you get anti-virus/spyware,web link scanner, mail scanner, and a couple of shields. However, with free, you can"t go hog wild on the internet and not expect to pick something up.

AVG is fine for basic computer protection.....
But - I also suggest adding these 2 free programs to it ...for backup.....it will catch what AVG misses.... http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-An...04572.html http://download.cnet.com/SuperAntiSpywar...23889.html |

If you want free then I recommend Avast , superantispyware and Malwarebytes. coupled with Comodo firewall They are all free for personal use . It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly.

email ,facebook ebay can all be place to get a virus i would suggest the simple solution is go for paid with e mail scanning and real time scanning also strong firewall and privacy when using credit card that says KAPERSKY.as will be less problem decision making for them.and you will need to take care of backups for them
