Why is the BBC obsessed with silly nonsense from America?

Cost. It costs a lot to run a 24 hour news programme. So you invent stories.

Personally if I were a singer and asked to sing in freezing temperatures, I would mime - just in case I made a fool of myself.

I really don't know. It seems like all the news media all over the world are nosing into our American business. Don't they have anything better to do? Doesn't anything happen in the rest of the world, that they have to be watching every little move that we make in the US?
I mean, I don't go around obsessing about you folks's soccer, do I? Do what you want, and let us do what we want.

Your question is completely valid.
I also think you have answered it yourself.
US coverage may require a visit to the USA by an overpaid useless reporter and his sound/camera crew.

The AVERAGE American is totally oblivious to the UK.
Their political elite USE us when necessary.

Our political elite are useless.
That includes both Blair and Thatcher..
