I keep waiting for someone to mis quote Barry Goldwater: "Extremism in defense of the environment is no vice, Moderation in defense of the Earth is no virtue".......then shortly thereafter we will have the Green Police.....something like the SS except with the recyling triangle on their armbands......

It's their right and their decision. I don't know how successful they will be, but I don't see it backfiring against them. The statement you reference is clearly an attempt on their part to calm their supporters and reassure their financial contributors.that everything is OK. That's the smart thing to do and I'm sure they will be fine regardless of what happens.
