Laptop screen goes blank sometimes? (10 points)?

I have a Macbook A1181 Core 2 Duo, and when I go to start it up it gives the apple logo with the chime noise but after a few seconds the screen goes blank. The Macbook is still turned on because when I press a key on the keyboard the screen lights up again but it doesnt load to the desktop? It comes up with a bluish grey screen and then the spinning rainbow wheel. Sometimes it will load with my desktop background but the screen is still going off every few seconds? Any ideas?
