What's the best way to get online/internet referrals?

Many sites I've joined offer a pittance to read emails, click on ads, take surveys, etc. It seems the only way to earn any decent amount of money is to attract referrals. However, I don't know many people personally who are interested in that kind of thing and I don't want to hassle people around me just to make a few more dollars. Is there any other way to attract referrals for internet sites?
