Well, there are two primary ways. One, it is used like advertising to create awareness about a brand or a product. Two, it can be used to create community and discussion about a brand or a product.

The second is more difficult to do but very valuable when it works. Never before have we really had the opportunity to interacte directly with a brand, but social media allows this.

Social media is all types of online communication from Facebook to Twitter and/or blogging. What makes social media different is the communication that happens back and forth verses traditional advertising with is only a direct broadcast to the consumer.
