what would social security be like now if President bush had managed to privatize it in 2000?

It would be bankrupt, quite obviously! Of course, that was probably what he hoped would happen. Republicans never wanted Social Security to exist in the first place. It was a Democratic idea all along, from the time Roosevelt proposed it as part of dealing with the Great Depression. And ever since President Reagan was elected, the Republicans have made no bones about wanting to dismantle the legacy of Roosevelt, which naturally includes Social Security. They succeeded in wiping out all the protections against banks and savings and loans going under and, surprise, surprise, these went under again, just as they did at the beginning of the Great Depression. Hm, I wonder if anybody learned anything from that?
