Social Media IS communications. There are over 500 MILLION active users on Facebook alone, active meaning that they have logged in at least once during the past thirty days. It takes time to build friendships, so get started and join groups... create a fan page for your campaign. Blog about it. Use Twitter. They are all free, so take advantage of it.
