How can you tell if someone has private messaging settings on Facebook?

Sorry for the wording but what I mean is, you know on Facebook how you can only receive messages from your friends? Well I want to know how you can tell if you someone has that enabled or not.

Try sending them a message?.. To change this on your profile, just look at your privacy settings.
