I believe it gives them the power to share your information with anyone, track whatever website you go on (if you're logged into facebook and go onto a webpage outside of the site and it has a 'like' button, facebook already know you are there!).
It's rather scary the power you are giving them just by signing up. This seems to be the future though, and it doesn't seem much can be done to stop it.
