Create a killer bio/profile, start adding people you know/knew from school, add family, maybe then start making connections to your friends' friends. Don't start adding random people, though no matter how bad you want or need friends on Facebook!
Think of Facebook as sex: it's fun but you set your limit(s) and be safe :]
