Are members of the military discouraged by their commands from registering with Facebook or Twitter?
I'm a retired Marine and I've been searching for ol' service buddies to see if they are still in or retired. I couldn't find any active members of Facebook or Twitter.

My husband's group will tell the Airmen to be careful what they post online in terms of photos and content, and to also watch their privacy settings, but no one is actively discouraged from having a Facebook or other social networking page.

Not as far as I know. With the existence of the internet and social networking crap like Facebook, everybody stresses the importance of OPSEC (and I've seen a few Privates get in deep shit for violating OPSEC lately), but I, nor any of my buddies (some of which are SF), haven't been "discouraged" from creating social networking accounts.
Basically, they don't care if you have one, they just make sure you don't post anything you shouldn't on it. BTW just ignore that Spamit Hered guy. Civilians trying to tell combat vets how we should feel is just plain dumb. |

I have my Marine friend in Afghanistan on Facebook whenever he gets the chance to go online. Same with another Army guy who's online like everyday.
It's only when you have some kind of security clearance that they start being strict....especially if you have TS Clearance and above. |
